PRE-ARRIVAL - ETA October
More backward, concentrated and closed, yet just loaded with potential, the 2015 Ermitage Le Reverdy is, I suspect, the finest white I’ve tasted from this estate. Coming from the Beaume and le Méal lieux-dits and an even split of Marsanne and Roussanne, brought up in a mix of stainless steel and demi-muids, it has full-bodied richness, a liqueur of rocks-like aromatic profile, integrated acidity and sensational purity. It will have two decades or more of life. The quality (and number of cuvées) from this estate continues to soar, and this is easily the finest lineup up of wines I’ve tasted from this team.
Owned by Michel Chapoutier yet run as a separate entity (albeit one that shares many of the same philosophical leanings), Ferraton has a charming wine bar just across a quiet street from the Rhône. Like M. Chapoutier itself, many of Ferraton's own vineyards are being farmed organically and biodynamically, and there are a range of offerings from each appellation. Generally speaking, quality rises as one ascends the range, from blended, négociant-level wines to own-farmed parcel selections.
